Mpumalanga - Cosmos Country
Cosmos Country Travel Directory
Cosmos Country lies in the south western part of Mpumalanga against the Free State and Gauteng borders. This region covers a wide area of flat open high-altitude grassland interspersed with low rolling hills.
Cosmos Country is a flower lover’s paradise as well as the perfect destination for the watersports fanatic and enthusiastic golfer. In the midst of its natural beauty this region has a profusion of game reserves and excellent fishing spots. The area is also steeped in South African history and culture. There are Anglo-Boer War relics, Chief Mzilikazi's kraal, and the Dutch Reformed Church. You can also see the first bridge over the Vaal River, opened by Paul Kruger in 1891.
This is one of the country’s most productive areas. Farming is a crucial industry here, with maize, beef, mutton, sunflower seed, sorghum, groundnuts, potatoes, grain and vegetables making up an agricultural industry barely equalled on the continent.
In the late summer and autumn, fields are covered with masses of pink and white Cosmos, an attractive wild flower that is officially considered a weed in South Africa but planted in many gardens none-the-less. The Cosmos flower was originally imported as horse-feed for English troops.
Amongst all the beauty, Cosmos Country is the centre of crude oil production in Southern Africa and is the only place in the world where petrol is made out of coal for use on a commercial basis. The region is also home to the biggest underground coal mining complex on earth, supplying raw materials to Sasol. Cosmos region is the only area in the world where coal and gold are mined at the same place at the same time.
Known as the 'energy belt' of Mpumalanga, the Cosmos Country region houses a number of power stations that supply energy to most Southern African countries.
